New HbA1c measure from 1 October 2012

HbA1c levels, which are currently measured in percentage units, will be measured in millimoles per mole (mmol/mol) by all countries from later part of 2012 onwards, [1] following a recommendation by the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry. An online HbA1c converter is also available. [2]

One blogger has come out with an easier way to convert the percentage to mmol/mol as follows, though it can be applied only to decimal free figures:

6% is 42 mmol/mol 6-2 is 4 and then 4-2 is 2, hence 42

7% is 53 mmol/mol 7-2 is 5 and then 5-2 is 3, hence 53

8% is 64 mmol/mol 8-2 is 6 and then 6-2 is 4, hence 64

9% is 75 mmol/mol 9-2 is 7 and then 7-2 is 5, hence 75

Or remember 6% = 42 mmol/mol and then on add 11 for each % increase (again only to decimal-free figures).
